Become a Personal Goal Setting Rock Star in 5 Steps

17 October 2010 No Comment

Personal goal setting can open your life to all of the opportunities and dreams you have always wanted. This simple process has been around forever, and although it is talked about frequently, very few people know how to set personal goals correctly.

Here are five quick pointers to take your personal goal setting to the upper echelon of achievement and turn you—yes, you! – into a personal goal setting rock star.

1.       Know Your Purpose! We all have goals and things we want to accomplish. Whether it’s wanting to be wealthy or having the body we’ve always wanted, our goals must give us an overwhelming sense of drive. An easy way to do this is by giving our goals purpose. Instead of saying you want to be rich, decide for yourself what you are going to do with your money to make the world a better place. Or let’s say you want to lose 15 pounds. Document your journey on a blog and inspire others to live a healthier lifestyle. Make the goal bigger than yourself, and you will find that extra kick of motivation to see it through!

2.       Know Exactly What You Want. Let’s again say that your goal is to become wealthy. It’s not enough to say, “I want to be rich!” This is far too subjective. You need to pin your goal down to an exact figure that is nor hazy nor vague. Give it a time-frame, and an exact number, and you suddenly pull that lofty ambition from the clouds and place it firmly into reality where it belongs. “I want to be making $100,000 a year by December 31st, 2011.”

3.       Build a Goal Plan. Personal goal setting rock stars have a clear road map for their success. They know all the rungs on the ladder, and they know that as they progress along each little segment, they are continually building the confidence and determination to propel them to ever greater heights. Think of it as going for a long run. You don’t think of the overall journey – that’s too daunting. Instead focus on one mile at a time. Focus on what is in front of you, and you will get there quicker than you know it.

4.       Understand That Setbacks Will Occur. Many people rush into goal setting, only to get thrown off course the minute things don’t go their way. Have the mindset that roadblocks will come your way—it’s how you deal with them that will decide your fate. Adapt, adjust, make new plans—do whatever you have to do to get past it. Ultimately, the means do not matter. It’s the ends that do.

5.       Pick Your Groupies Wisely! A lot of how we view the world, a lot of the actions that we carry out, are influenced by the people we choose to surround ourselves with. Successful personal goal setting requires that we have positive and supportive people in our entourage. Avoid the naysayers and doom-and-gloom types. Success breeds success, and this concept is true of the people in our lives. As the saying goes, “If you want to fly with the eagles, don’t hang out with turkeys.”
